Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize for what the Nobel committee called “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” Maathai died of cancer on Sunday at the age of 71, but leaders from around the world are paying tribute to her as one of the most widely respected women on the continent.  Her sustainability and community-building ideas continue to inspire environmental efforts in other countries.
