How much screen time is too much for your child? A recent survey from Common Sense Media found that 17% of kids aged 8 and under use a mobile device every day, leading the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to revise its recommendations for children’s screen time.“Excessive media use is associated with obesity, poor school performance, aggression and lack of sleep,” explains co-author of the policy and pediatrician Marjorie Hogan. The AAP says parents should limit kids' media time to 2 hours a day or less, and children under age 2 shouldn’t have screen time at all. The new recommendations also encourage parents to create a “family media use plan” that doesn’t allow kids to use electronic devices during meals or after they go to bed. Parents should also make sure their children don’t have TV’s or internet access in their bedrooms.
