Most Americans work on vacation, say researchers

A new study by Harris Interactive has found that 54% of Americans say their boss expects them to work while on vacation.  This may be due to the fact that many people have a hard time breaking their regular work routine, or the rise in mobile technology that allows us to work virtually anywhere.  

A new study by Harris Interactive has found that 54% of Americans say their boss expects them to work while on vacation.  This may be due to the fact that many people have a hard time breaking their regular work routine, or the rise in mobile technology that allows us to work virtually anywhere.

 

Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research, cautions, “Mobile access to email is certainly a critical aspect of how we do business now, but it is important to remember that there is a time and place for everything.”

 

While some feel that keeping up with work email makes it easier to return to work after vacation, others believe that working on vacation can backfire for both employers and employees.  According to Terrie Campbell, VP of Strategic Marketing at Ricoh, “Workers absolutely must have a chance to recharge for themselves, their families and their career.”
