As countries around the world mourn the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Conn., parents are struggling to figure out how to talk to their children about what happened. Psychiatrist Dr. Gail Saltz says parents definitely need to talk to their children about the shooting, because "it's such a huge story, it's better that they hear it from you… You want to do it in an open-ended calm way, 'this happened,' " Saltz says. "But stay calm, because children take their cues from you." Be honest, "but don’t over-inform about details." When it's time to go to school, don't show anxiety or start school phobias, Saltz advises. "Have them go to school, assure them they are safe."
