It all started when Kaete Nazaroff came across a Facebook page dedicated to 2-year-old Tripp Halstead, who suffered from a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a tree limb during Hurricane Sandy.

The Facebook page Nazaroff came across was started by Tripp’s mom to keep family and friends updated on Tripp’s recovery process. Nazaroff asked her husband Dave, an eight-time Ironman triathlete, if he could ride his bike from their home in New York to Georgia to raise money for the Halstead family.

With the help of social media and the support of many fans along the journey, Dave Nazaroff completed the trip, raising a total of $156k for the family as of Monday.

“I was blown away by people’s generosity. I’m just a guy riding a bike for a cause, for people to travel hours just to be on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere cheering me on, it was pretty amazing,” he explained.
