Actor Gary Sinise's role as amputee "Lt. Dan" in "Forrest Gump" made him a hero to real-life disabled veterans and inspired Sinise to help build specially-designed homes for the most gravely wounded. His Gary Sinise Foundation is building special homes designed to meet the needs of veterans who come back from war missing limbs. Sinese went before a town board himself to get permission, knowing it would be harder for the board members to say no to him directly.
