Do you have a Samsung Smart TV in your home? If you’re using its voice activated feature because it’s so convenient, you may want to watch what you say near the TV.
Here’s a quote from Samsung’s privacy policy about the feature: “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party.”
Corynne McSherry, the intellectual property director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, raises this point: “If I were the customer, I might like to know who that third party was, and I’d definitely like to know whether my words were being transmitted in a secure form.”
But there’s another even bigger concern to consider: the voice command feature may allow hackers to hear everything you’re saying while in front of the TV.
The good news is that Smart TV owners can protect their privacy by simply turning off the voice command option. For added protection, disconnect your TV from the Internet when you don’t need it.
