A study has found that exposure to violence (such as domestic violence between parents, physical maltreatment by an adult, or bullying) can cause changes in DNA leading to seven to 10 years of premature aging. This is because the telomeres get shorter as we age, and stress can contribute to that. There is something we can all learn about aging better from this study, and that is that nutrition, exercise and stress reduction may be able to lengthen telomeres.
