Do you know any new moms who have struggled with breastfeeding? The beginning stages of breastfeeding are most important for ensuring a good milk supply for the baby, and there are a few things to be aware of. Dr. Deborah Bain, a pediatrician at Health Kids Pediatrics in Frisco, Texas, explains why breastfeeding can be difficult for some moms: “Some reasons a strong breastfeeding relationship is not established include not getting a good latch in the beginning; baby continuously falling asleep due to under stimulation or the medication the mother may be on making them sleepy; jaundice or premature babies that lack muscle tone.” New moms can increase milk supply by eating lactogenic foods such as carrots, asparagus, and dried apricots, which are all high in phytoestrogens that can boost  milk production. Foods with omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats can also help. Coconut oil, oatmeal, and brown rice are also good choices for breastfeeding moms.
