Study: Allowing organ donation status on Facebook increased number of donors

Including your organ donor status on Facebook can help save lives, according to a new study. Facebook’s donor program was launched last May, leading 57,451 users to update their organ donor status and generating more than 13,012 new organ registrations nationwide, a response in the number of organ donors that is higher than ever before.

Including your organ donor status on Facebook can help save lives, according to a new study. Facebook’s donor program was launched last May, leading 57,451 users to update their organ donor status and generating more than 13,012 new organ registrations nationwide, a response in the number of organ donors that is higher than ever before. “If we can harness that excitement in the long term, then we can really start to move the needle on the big picture. The need for donor organs vastly outpaces the available supply and this could be a way to change that equation,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Andrew M. Cameron. Authors of the study are working to find a way to keep the efforts going and to encourage more people to become organ donors at a time when organs are desperately needed to save lives.
