In N.J., some kids learn there is no free ride

A nonprofit called Second Life Bikes in Asbury Park, N.J. gives kids the chance to get a free used bicycle once they work 15 hours in the Second Life Bikes shop.

11-year-old America Rice has been putting in her hours at the shop. She explains, “if you want something, you have to earn it. Everything is not going to come to you just when you want it. You have to do certain things, and if you’re not able to do it then you won’t get it.”

The Second Life Bikes organization has helped about 400 children earn a bike of their choice. These kids learn that hard work really does pay off, and many of them continue to donate their time and skills after putting in the required 15 hours. They feel accomplished, and, as America says, they want to give back to the community.
