Dental hygiene may factor into the development of Alzheimer's disease, according to a study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Bacteria in your mouth, which is linked to gum disease, can get into the bloodstream and spread to other areas of the body, such as the brain. "The issue is to reduce the bacterial load that occupies our gum tissues, to reduce the bacterial assault if and when it happens," says lead researcher StJohn Crean. Be sure to brush, floss and get regular teeth cleanings to lower the number of bacteria in your mouth and reduce the risk of that bacteria traveling to other areas of your body.
