Volvo has come out with the world's first commercial airbag designed to protect pedestrians rather than drivers in a car accident. That's just one of many safety features on display in its latest model of the Volvo V40 compact car. The pedestrian airbag inflates across one-third of the windshield and raises the back of the car hood as soon as the bumper detects a collision with a person. Such technology could cut down on lethal encounters between humans and cars that lead to U.S. pedestrians making up 12 percent of all traffic fatalities.

Google has announced it is donating $11.5 million to several coalitions fighting to end the modern-day slavery of some 27 million people around the world who are being held, forced to work or provide sex against their will. This is believed to be the largest-ever corporate grant devoted to the advocacy, intervention and rescue of people trapped in slavery. "Many people are surprised to learn there are more people trapped in slavery today than any time in history," said Jacquelline Fuller, director of charitable giving and advocacy for Google. "The good news is that there are solutions."

As MIT Sloan School of Management director Peter Senge has pointed out, achieving sustainability goals often requires "a massive undertaking in collaboration," and "the parties that need to collaborate often aren't naturally inclined to -- such as competitors in the same industry." In this article, written in honor of America Recycles Day, Michael Zacka of Tetra Pak explains how his company did this by joining forces with the nation's three other largest carton manufacturers -- Elopak, Evergreen Packaging and SIG/SIG Combibloc -- and later the paperboard supplier Weyerhaeuser. Together they formed The Carton Council to establish aggressive sustainability goals, and three years later, over 41 million U.S. households now have access to carton recycling programs. What a good example of the difference companies can make when they work together toward a mutual goal!

A well deserved Good for You to Wrangler. The jeans company put loyalty to its employees first after its factory was destroyed by a tornado. As one employee, Myra Hall said: "Wrangler stepped up to the plate. They took care of us." And loyalty from their employees is what they are getting in return for re-building and providing continued employment to their workers. May this be inspiring and motivating to other companies; it's an example of corporate America at its best while faced with the worst of times. And it says a lot about the people running Wrangler: they're making a positive difference in the lives of their employees and serving as an inspiring example of what is possible.
