J.K. Rowling has been stepping up her charity efforts. Most recently, she announced a $16M donation to Edinburgh University to fund a clinic for multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative disease – and a new eBook version of her massively successful “Tales of Beedle the Bard” Harry Potter companion book, which has raised more than $28M for her children’s charity, Lumos, since 2008. “All proceeds from the sale of the book go to Lumos, the charity I founded to help the 8 million children trapped in institutions around the world,” the author says. “Lumos works to transform systems of caring for children, closing institutions, reuniting families, and preventing other children from being institutionalized.”

David Beckham met the Prime Minister David Cameron today to urge him to take immediate action to tackle the hidden crisis of ‘stunting’, the irreversible damage caused to a child’s brain and body if they don’t get the right nutrients in their first 1,000 days of life, a problem that affects 180 million of the world's youngest children. Beckham, a longstanding Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, visited Cameron personally to deliver a letter that's been co-signed by over 50 celebrities including Ewan McGregor, Lewis Hamilton, Robbie Williams, Claudia Schiffer, Whoopi Goldberg, Orlando Bloom, Boris Becker and Alex Ferguson. "During the coming weeks all eyes will be on London for the greatest show on earth", said Beckham. "As a UNICEF Ambassador, I'm asking the Prime Minister to use the global spotlight on our nation to make children around the world the real winners of these Games."

Says Jessica Alba, "I realized over time that when I eliminated fragrances and toxic chemicals in my environment” – in particular commercial household cleaners with harsh ingredients – “it eliminated my allergies and my reactions... When I first became a parent, I wanted to put together the safest and healthiest home for my family. And I found that it was really frustrating and really difficult…I almost had too much information.” So Alba started a company, The Honest Company, to help mothers like herself give their children the best start possible. The company offers nontoxic baby products and household cleaners in reusable packages, available through a subscription service that delivers orders door-to-door.
