We all know what it’s like to have a catchy refrain to a popular song stuck in our heads, but have you ever thought about who’s singing the lines with your favorite artists?
Merry Clayton may not be a name you recognize, but the professional backup singer has vocally supported and enhanced many of our favorite song lyrics from artists like Joe Crocker, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees and the Rolling Stones.
“Twenty Feet From Stardom,” a new documentary by Morgan Neville, will bring professional backup singers like Clayton out of the shadows and into the spotlight to provide an inside look at these incredible musicians. Neville explains that backup singers don’t get any credit, saying, “People think being a backup singer is just about singing ooooh or ahhhhhh. But it’s about so much more—the way they sing, the way they do harmony.”
